Homeschooling For College – Be Sure to Include This Subject

Among other things, homeschool students are known for having a solid background in the subject areas of social sciences and literature, but one other subject must be included in a thorough and effective homeschooling program and that is the course study of basic computer skills. This may not be a subject area that many parents will think to include, as they assume that their child will have basic understanding just because they access social media and email, but these programs alone will not be enough training for your student as they leave for college soon.

Homeschool students planning to attend any type of college must be able to operate word processing programs, email attachments, on-line calendars, basic spreadsheets, and table features such as sorting and column insertion prior to entering the college world. Is Your Student Using Their Time Well?

Time management can be one of the most difficult tasks for a new college student to grasp. There are numerous distractions that take their eyes off of their studies, and the statistics on college drop-outs, fail-outs, and drawn-out degrees will show that students are entering college unprepared to do the work, complete it on time, and avoid the pitfalls of unstructured freedoms. But learning to manage time and the tasks that a student has to do can be taught early in school, even in middle school, in order to build this skill into the very nature and character of your student.

A few simple steps can make learning time management skills easier, but begin with a simple exercise. For about a week or so, have students keep a daily log of all of the activities that they do each day, and for how long they do them. Depending upon the age of your student, you may have to help with this, but like an exercise or dietary log, this will show them how much time it takes them to complete basic tasks. They should record everything that they do for a consistent period so that they will have a true picture of their time use and misuse.

The Difference Between Being Smart, Educated, and Intelligent

I’ve always been intrigued by the subject of intelligence. As a child my mother would refer to me as “smart,” but I quickly noticed that all parents refer to their children as smart. In time I would discover that all children are not smart, just as all babies are not cute. If that were the case, we’d have a world full of beautiful, smart people – which we don’t.

Some of us are smart; but not as smart as we think, and others are smarter than they seem, which makes me wonder, how do we define smart? What makes one person smarter than another? When do “street smarts” matter more than “book smarts”? Can you be both smart and stupid? Is being smart more influenced by genetics or one’s environment?
